who doesn’t like flea markets? let me correct myself, who doesn’t LOVE flea markets?!?! for those who want one of a kind pieces [with some stories to tell], the flea is one of the best places to spend your afternoons at, browsing through mounds and mounds of vintage goodies, as well as uber cute crafty pieces for your home and closet! i get tons of ideas as well as i make my way from booth to booth and my mental journal just goes into overdrive. one of the best flea markets around town is the brooklyn flea. it is open all year round, with the venue changing based on the weather/season. i managed to catch one of the last weekends of the outdoor flea at williamsburg before they headed indoors and below you’ll find all the wonderful items i was salivating for…
home sweet home
travels: grand turk
the last port of call of our wonderful cruise was at grand turk, turks and caicos. as we pulled in to the pier, sandy white beachfront with royal blue lounge chairs and umbrellas welcome you. three things summarize this port — duty free shopping, beach and jimmy buffet. unless you signed up for any of the shore excursions or you rent a car, there’s really not much you can do by foot except for the above mentioned. but that doesn’t mean that it’s less fun than the other ports. i am actually glad that this was towards the end of the trip, you can really just relax and chill [while you cry inside thinking that the trip is soon going to be over]… i kid, i kid…
eats: glady’s cafe
after spending the entire morning relaxing at magen’s bay, we decided to head downtown and try out some local fare. we asked our friendly taxi driver for recommendations and her two picks were cuzzins and glady’s cafe. unfortunately, cuzzins was closed — there was a sign saying that they are on vacation and won’t be back in a couple of weeks. i guess that is one downside of going during off season, but thankfully, glady’s cafe was open. our taxi driver said to make sure to try any fish dish, conch and fungi — but as we looked at the menu, our hungry eyes darted to regular favorites like pork chop and oxtails! haha, well at least we weren’t as bad as the others in the restaurant who ordered hamburgers!
travels: st. thomas, usvi
after a nice day in puerto rico, we embark the ship again and find ourselves waking up [early in the morning] to paradise! st thomas was my favorite port of call actually on this trip. it was so beautiful, i loved every single minute we were there. this time around, we headed to the beach. you’d be a fool not to hit the beach when you’re in st thomas. we spent the entire morning at magens bay — we were told that it is one of the top ten beaches in st thomas. it was a 15-20 minute taxi ride from the port, a series of very narrow winding uphill roads. the trip going there was an adventure on its own! taxi fare was i think $9/person and the entrance fee to the beach was $4/person. the beach was awesome, water was very clean and clear, fish were swimming to the shore, fine white sand…i couldn’t have asked for anything more. it was so serene and peaceful. best part of all, my little boy was so happy swimming in the ocean, frolicking in the sand and making sandcastles. we explored the downtown area in the afternoon and checked out the stores — i was really just looking at the architecture. i loved all the alley ways off of the main road. there was a warmth to the architecture as most of everything is natural stone, bricks, plaster, cement, wood and brightly colored paint. it was a happy place.
shops: franky’s vintage store [san juan, pr]
okay, so who doesn’t get excited about shopping? especially when you’re in a different place?!? well, i do! i’m not too big on duty free shopping [which is what greets you at each port of call in the cruise] in general, i tend to go to small local stores and see what they offer that i won’t find anywhere else where i live. one of a kind pieces worthy to take home and remind me of fond memories of the trip… well, in this case, while at san juan, pr i immediately spot this vintage store and my heart just skips a beat! Franky’s is a fabulous vintage store with amazing finds. it is heaven for someone like me and i literally could spend countless hours in there, only if i could! it would be mecca for merchandisers as well as the products run from vintage furniture, to milk bottles, to luggages, old books, records, dolls, clothing, housewares, anything and everything! ahhhh i miss that store already! i wish i could come back… and yes, i did buy something, actually it was the only shopping i did while in san juan… and don’t laugh [my husband did], of course i end up getting something vintage, but sadly not vintage puerto rican hahaha — well, who cares?! i love it and that’s all that really matters, right? the best part was, i got to meet franky himself and he even gave me a warm big hug!
eats: barrachina, etc.
if we had a couple more days in puerto rico, i would have loved to explore the culinary tradition of this country, eating in restaurants who offered the best local fare, but we only had a couple of hours to spare so we headed to restaurant barrachina ~ the birthplace of the famous pina colada! with the hot and humid weather, and with all the walking we were doing, a glass of pina colada was in order. we sat outdoors, ordered our refreshments and a sampler plate of puertorican delights [dorado fritters, turnovers, calamari, empanadas, plaintains, etc..] i really wanted to check out the other restaurants, but being on a cruise with food available 24/7, i really wasn’t all gungho about eating. i did snap a couple shots of some interesting restaurants we saw along the way…
travels: san juan, puerto rico
for this year’s trip, we decided to go on a cruise. first port of call was san juan, puerto rico! with a toddler in tow and only 9 hours to spare, we decided to explore san juan by foot… well, actually the 7 square block grid of streets full of restaurants and stores by the pier… i was in awe of the architecture — all the brightly painted buildings and beautiful metal grills. there was an old world charm about it but at the same time felt very contemporary. the pictures will tell the story…
s&g: milton glaser
we are back! and what a wonderful and relaxing vacation it was! i am so excited to share with you stories and pictures of the amazing places we’ve been to… but i’m not going to lie, i’m not too keen about going through 1,600++ pictures right now… back from vacation means back to work and what great inspiration i saw today as i was walking at kips bay this morning, makes me really excited to be work mode again… i know, i’m such a nerd!
i love love love this signage outside milton glaser’s office… it looks so modern, so smart, so chic, so european… and i like how the transom was not spared — “art is work” — i couldn’t agree more… and if any of you don’t know who milton glaser is, and you’re a new yorker, shame on you! if you know the iconic “i heart ny” logo, that’s milton right there!
